  • Allottment Plot Planning

    Hi All

I've recently obtained a plot local to me. It's 8 metres wide by 16 metres long approx. I've done a sketch as to what I might want/need etc.

Can anyone think of any fatal flaws in my design? I've got various beds of dirrent sizes as well as permy beds for fruit etc.

    Permy beds

    Straberries x 3 (1m x 2m)
    Rhubarb x 1 (1m x 2m)
    Gooseberry x 1 (1m x 1m)
    Blackberry x 1 (1m x 1m)
    Black current x 1 (1m x 1m)

Space for 6ft x 4ft shed, water butt and compost bin

    5 L shaped beds (made up of 3 1m x 1m beds)

    9 beds of 1m x 2m.

Obviously these crops will be rotated yearly.

I know I have a lot of work to do but this looks like my final design.

    Thanks for the advice

Personally, I would have all the rotational beds of a similar size. I reckon you could get 11 1x4m beds in there without too much trouble. I would also put strawbs in with another fruit. Will all your fruit be in separate beds? if so, how will you organise your fruit cage?
    Tx

Good point. Either do that, or divide the beds into groups that add up to equal areas. Otherwise as the years go by you could find yourself with too much or too little space for a particular crop!

I would make sure that you don't have to have different sizes of covers for the beds, ie cloche hoops and pieces of netting/fleece. Otherwise, when you rotate things like brassicas/carrots you might struggle to fit the appropriate covers and have to spend a fortune on different set-ups.
