  • Allotment plan!

After doing a bit of research I decided that 8 main beds was a good idea and then I have room for some extra beds at the back and some fruit cages.

It's an 8 bed clockwise annual crop rotation.

The empty bed at the back will most likely be used for asparagus and then I still have room to add a few more beds in if I want to.

Now I just need t get a move on and clear the weeds and mark out the beds!

Nice plan, although I had to look up Chenopodiaceae!

It depends what you like to eat, though. If it were me I'd double up on the potatoes and brassicas and squash everything else into the other four beds. I'd still get a four-year rotation out of it.

I only know of mexican tree spinach and strawberry spinach for that family and I wouldn't want to put either of those in a bed. Where there other things you were thinking?

Have you got your rotation from a tried and tested source? You have umbelifers (roots to me) following curcurbits (greedy crops lots of oganic matter). In my mind there should be another year inbetween.

Have a go, I am sure you will soon tweak it after a year of growing

I also think that you will need more space for the brassicas, assuming that you eat sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, broccoli, Calabrese, swede, turnips and the myriad of Asian varieties available.

With the spuds are you looking at new potatoes, main crop or both?

Yes. I don't eat nearly enough of this stuff to warrant a whole bed of it. Potatoes on the other hand...

With Martin on this one, double the spuds, especially if you are growing, 1st, 2nd and main crop varities. How big are the beds?

Beds on allotment are a meter wide, I also have some room to grow at home though so some spuds will be staying in garden :-)

Is it possible to grow those spuds at the lottie and use the space at home for the spinach and cut & come again crops as you're more likely to pop out the kitchen to harvest a few leaves than dig up a pound of spuds.
