I have planted Asparagus seeds this year and they are all coming up very nicely. However, I have read that I should soon be cutting down the foliage. Does this apply to my new crop or only to established plants?

Yes..you will need to trim down the top growth this year once it has started to die back - yellow and brown with a bit of green!.
Mine are established and will do mine in another 4 wks roughly.
Make sure they have plenty of room for the roots to grow. The tops may look pathetic, but the roots grow like mad and need unrestricted growth. Are they in the ground or in pots?

It would be best to leave the foliage to die down naturally this first year it will also help to protect the young crowns from frost.
a covering of straw or fleece during the winter will also help.
Next year you may remove the foliage as it starts to die away during the autumn.

They are in the ground at my allotment, so root growth should be no problem.

I will keep an eye on them and follow your advice in a few weeks time.
