Whilst watering plants in cold frame tonight, I noticed that most of my cauliflower plants had had thier growing tips nipped off, these had not been eaten but where just left on top of the pots. The cabbage plants in the same cold frame had been hardly touched. Any ideas what is doing this, and how to stop them will be much appreciated.

Cauliflower Tippy NibblyItis?
Ooh! Nasty! Don't Know.....? But the point is, that you need to protect your seedings. And if they're in a coldframe, they are as vulnerable as if they were in the ground if you don't protect them against slugs and snails. Whether a pest is attacking that crop but not the other is of interest, but with all crops you need to be aware on a daily basis. Yesterday I noticed a blackcurrant leaf was somewhat distorted, so I unfurled it. It revealed a caterpillar-type grub. Now there ISN'T a caterpillar-type grub, so report me... Vigilance, common sense and general awareness of your crops is all that's needed if you love what you grow. X

Silly mistake
Had put more plants in cold frame to harden off, silly mistake had not found the culprit, thought it was slugs so put slug pellets in cold frame with plants. unable to make lottie for two days work commitments, went over on thursday after work only to notice more damage, this time noticed most of the plant tops where in between the trays. Salvaged what plants I could and placed two mouse traps in the cold frame amongst the trays, managed to trap one mouse so far,(checked traps yesterday ). |
