The way you grip with flip-flops has no bearing on the way bunions are formed. All of your toes grip the flip flop - bunions are where the toe is deformed in the horizontal plane, not the stress of vertical pressure which occurs when toes"grip". Toes don't "grip" between each other, even fingers struggle to do that.

Bunions are somewhat inherent, you're either susceptible to them or not. Shoes that overcrowd the toes will not help, but again, they do not "cause" bunions. However, more women suffer with bunions than men, so tight shoes certainly don't help.
