It is vermiculte and I've no idea what it does to be honest, I just thought it looked neat. I'm a novice myself, only been doing this lark a year.

Just found this which explains what it is and why it's used.

Vermiculite - Uses in the Garden

Looks like I've been wasting my money. That said, I don't think it's particularly expensive.

I saw it in a garden centre whilst buying some seed trays and it looked sensible. I had a hard time working out the difference between perlite and vermiculate and as far as I can tell vermiculte you place on top ot the soil/compost to aid germination, and perlite is mixed in to help drainage?

Someone a little more knowledgeable wil surely correct if I'm wrong.
