If you have room, try and grow 'spare' or 'reserve' plants in a clump at the end of a row, so that if you have any losses you can fill the spaces. This can save a lot of disappointment and only costs a few seeds and a little extra time. This is also a useful tip if you're experimenting with sowing times outdoors - at the same time sow some in modules or pots indoors. If the outside ones die or get munched you haven't lost out.

If you have a new allotment, don't be afraid to ask your neighbours or any of the allotment committee for advice. 9 times out of 10 they will be flattered, and their advice will be the most relevant to your growing conditions. The committee members will want you to succeed with your plot, and will usually be more than happy to give advice.

“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”
