when planting squash, pumpkins or cougettes cover then ground first in cardboard then punch holes in it to plant through, then when plants are established mulch with FYM or grass clippings. this reduces the need for weeding/watering and when the plants have died off, leave the mulch in place over winter, then next year hey presto a quick dig and a lovely weed free area for that years crops.
