My tip sounds counter-intuitive: provide a hotel for snails.
I lay a roof tile or just a piece of flat wood on the ground on the lottie, and the molluscs congregate underneath it. I just pick up the tile and scrape the occupants off into the chicken run. Hey, it's recycling!
