That advice sounds about right to me - same as the way to tell a shop-bought one is ripe.
However, my cantaloupe style melons (in the greenhouse) took forever to get going and I
now have one melon developing - about the size of a ping-pong ball!!! Not much chance of it getting ripe this year methinks
