Pomona Fruits’ Top Tips for Autumn Harvests

By Sian Bunney
26th August 2016

Remember – when it comes to fruit trees, it’s not all about the growing season. Conditions in autumn and winter can turn out to be as equally important drivers of productivity as the weather in spring and summer. Taking an annual approach makes sense, as it means you’re always able to work towards a more productive garden, whatever the time of year.

Autumn – Long-Awaited Harvest

In a good year, late summer and autumn will be a prolonged blissful time of picking and gorging on your very own peaches, apricots, plums, gages, apples, pears and more. Depending on the cultivars you have chosen, you may also experience the special pleasure of preparing apples, pears, quinces and medlars for storage. If you do this carefully enough and time it well, you could even be enjoying your own fruit at Christmas.

In the midst of all this pleasure, you will need to find time for business. Autumn is the perfect time to order your next batch of fruit trees, and plant them while the soil in your garden still retains some of its summer heat. After you’ve done this and have generally tidied up, it will once again be time to start thinking about how best to approach the next round of winter pruning.
